Thanks Macintosh Users!28. June 2009 by Dr. Dave.
It is probably the 50% off sale at macProVideo.com that is doing it, but in any case I have noticed that copies of my video tutorials on Mac OS X Security are selling like mad this month. While 50% off also means 50% off the little bit I make on these, I am glad to see that so many people are realizing the importance of security on the Macintosh. So much has been made of the “safety” of Macs that they have become a tantalizing target for some of the more twisted malware authors. The enormous increase in malware as well as the number of security breaches has made possible a shift in our company’s focus that I would not have thought possible even two years ago: we have specialty in Macintosh security. Given the impressive safety record of Macs a number of professionals and businesses have switched and now find themselves with very crucial data that must be protected. Like any technology, even a Macintosh needs to be tweaked to safeguard data from those seeking to steal or destroy it. I invite Macintosh users to contact us. If you are in the Niagara area of Ontario, we have some great services to secure your Macs. For everyone else, I would be interested in seeing if there is interest in reviving this blog as a Macintosh security blog, with news and tips on Mac security. You can contact me from this page on our web site or by simply sending a comment to this blog and asking me not to post it as a comment. Friday June 12 is the last day to buy the fantastic MacUpdate bundle of apps at over 90% off the regular price. It is a great deal. I bought it myself and they do NOT pay me to advertise it. The security software alone is worth more than the price of the bundle, as is Tech Tool Pro 5 and some of the other software. Just go to the site and check it out. Decide for yourself. But hurry, because Friday is the last day to get it. And they will not repeat this same bundle!

OK, some good news. The folks at MacUpdate have just come out with their Spring Bundle that includes 13 apps at 91% off the retail price! While each of the apps are interesting and pretty cool, the one that catches my security eye is NetBarrier X5. This is an enhanced firewall and intrusion detection app that lets you control what gets into, and just as importantly what gets out of, your computer. If you consider its regular price of $49.95, then the bundle is less than that single app! You save a dollar on NetBarrier X5 AND get the other 12 apps FREE! Click on the button below to check out the bundle. As usual, if you buy from clicking on the button you support this web site but do not pay a penny more! So please help.

MORE “I TOLD YOU SO!” 8 MILLION health records in Virginia were encrypted and the originals deleted by a hacker who then demanded $10,000,000 for their decryption. This is something I have been warning my healthcare clients about for years. Think anyone will take the threat seriously now? I would hope so, but I’m not holding my breath. Also, if you read my book you would know the dangers of botnets and the importance of getting off one if you ARE infected, and STAYING off one. While they are more valuable with your computer alive and a slave, a botnet of 100,000 was recently ordered to self-destruct, destroying the data of these 100,000 computers. A moment of madness? A rival gang that got control? An error? WHO CARES? THE DATA IS GONE! Macintosh users, I salute you! My Macintosh security video tutorials are selling like mad this year, and I expect that most Macs are pretty well protected these days. As for PC users, many of you are sitting ducks. Yes, even the Vista users, especially if you have turned off the ‘annoying’ UAC. I use my own as little as possible because there is so much overhead in keeping secure, but it is very dangerous not to take the time and spend the money. Look, breaking into YOUR computer is BIG BUSINESS. Some very skilled people have been laid off from high-paying jobs. Computer crime can pay enormous sums. See why you are in DANGER? BOTH PC and MAC users can use the information in my e-book “Computer Security Basics” to protect themselves from botnets and other threats. You can buy that through our web site here.
